Prepare to perform one of the legal profession's most specialised functions.

This authorised training course equips eligible barristers and solicitors with the knowledge and practical skills required to pursue appointment as a Public Notary in NSW under the Public Notaries Act 1997 (NSW).

Delivered by The College of Law in conjunction with the Society of Notaries of New South Wales, applicants must have at least five years’ continuous standing in legal practice.

Designed to build practical knowledge and professional confidence, the course combines expert-led sessions with hands-on drafting workshops and demonstrations. You’ll learn to identify appearers, verify documents and prepare notarial certificates in both private and public form. You’ll also explore common law and civil law requirements, foreign-language and corporate documents, apostilles, DFAT processes, and emerging risks such as deepfakes and AML considerations. Practical guidance on completing certificates, recommended fees and the appointment process will help prepare you for notarial practice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Notarial Practice Training Course is designed for eligible NSW solicitors and barristers who are seeking to pursue appointment as a Public Notary.

It is suited to practitioners who:

  • Have been in legal practice for at least five (5) continuous years and meet the relevant eligibility requirements
  • Want to develop a specialist capability in notarial practice
  • Regularly work with clients, transactions or documentation involving overseas jurisdictions
  • Want to expand the services they can provide to clients
  • Are looking to differentiate their professional practice
  • This course has been designed for NSW practitioners. If you are from another state, please check with your relevant law society or regulator prior to enrolling.

This course is approved for NSW practitioners only. If you were admitted in another Australian jurisdiction and wish to attend the course, please contact the Legal Profession Admission Board directly to confirm your admission requirements before enrolling.

The intakes are scheduled to be offered three times a year, in February, May, and September. Please note that this is subject to change. Due to high demand and limited places, submitting your expression of interest is encouraged.

The course fees are currently $3,650 inclusive of GST (subject to change).

Yes, however, please be aware that Section 11 of the Public Notaries Act 1997 (NSW) restricts public notaries who are not part of a law practice (for example, in-house counsel) from performing notarial work for their employer or a client of their employer.

This course is recommended for private practice practitioners.

If you have any doubts about your eligibility for appointment as a Notary, please contact the Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) before enrolling in the course.

To successfully complete the course and be eligible to apply for appointment as a Notary, participants must:

  1. View the compulsory pre-learning video recordings
  2. Attend and participate in all sessions of the training course
  3. Achieve a grade of 75% in each section of the take-home examination
